College Education - What to Expect If You Are Expecting A's

Whether you plan to stay home and go to a community college or a local university or your journey involves going off to school, you most likely don't really know what to expect from college life. Is it really a bunch of partying? Are professors honestly difficult and ready to hand out failing grades? In high school, you may have maintained straight A's and expect the same from your college career. Should you worry about ruining your GPA?

Depending on where you choose to spend your college years, you'll have a very different college life. There are some universities that are quite conservative and focus mainly on competitive sports, turning out the top students in the country, or focus on a particular political or academic goal. Others are concerned with offering students more than an academic education and organize numerous groups and clubs in which students can participate. These colleges try to mimic real life in many ways, with apartment style housing and practical activities.

Yet more schools are socially active, turning college life into as much of a "summer camp" atmosphere as offering excellent academic standards. While this type of campus is often considered a "party school", many of these also have some of the top programs in the country for particular areas of study. It's important to consider the focus of your study and the major in which you are interested when determining the school you want to attend. This alone will determine a lot about how your college life will play out.

Do your research into the schools that offer the program in which you are interested. For example, if you are considering a major in marine biology, most of the excellent programs are at schools in coastal areas. Are you really going to perform well when your college life involves a nearby beach and active nightlife atmosphere? If you could easily be distracted, you may want to reconsider your major. If you can concentrate on your studies, you should look at each school and learn about the environment so that you know more about the social situation and can choose the one that suits you best.

One thing that is true across the board - some courses and professors are a breeze, and you can slide right through them. Others are difficult and particular, and here, you'll have to work hard to earn your A's! There's no way to avoid the tough professors, but you can always hope for the best.
